When I was working in the travel industry I had the pleasure of trying different types of massages (I know, tough life...) hot stone massage, full body massage, ayurvedic massage, Thai massage, Yoga massage you name it. What I have never had though was a Sports Massage so I was very happy to get the opportunity to try it at JY Physiotherapy in Kingston.

Having worked with Team GB at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing the team at JY Physiotherapy are certainly experts in all things sports injury and rehabilitation.

Now, I'm neither a professional or semi-professional athlete - I don't even like to go for a run to be honest - nor do I go to the gym regularly but teaching yoga 6-7 days a week is very physical so I thought that I could definitely benefit from this type of massage.

I don't think that you even have to be particularly sporty to have a sports massage... In fact anyone can benefit from a sports massage as it is designed to prevent and heal injuries of the muscles and tendons so particularly beneficial if you had an injury or suffer from chronic pain

I suffer from quite tight glutes (only one side) and backpain which is mainly due to my lumbar scoliosis - also my right shoulder and arm often give me problems so I wanted to see someone who can work through the muscle tension but also has good knowledge of scoliosis

Mandy, who was my massage therapist on the day was certainly very knowledgeable and picked up on imbalances and tension very quickly. She also gave me some really good and practical advice on how to relieve some very tight muscles with a tennis or golf ball! I felt really good the next day and a lot of the tension had virtually disappeared.

I do find that this type of massage is very beneficial for scoliosis as specific areas of concern are addressed. Scoliosis is not straight forward and can be quite confusing even for medical professional who might not necessarily specialise in that area. I definitely felt in really good hands!
