I’ve been practising yoga for nearly 12 years now and over that time I’ve definitely had a lot of opportunities to get very familiar with different yoga mats!
When I was asked to try and test the Fushi Sunlight High Performance yoga mat I was of course delighted as I love new yoga mats and am always looking for the best yoga mats to recommend to my students and my readers.
Since I’ve been teaching yoga I have become much more conscious of quality vs price and durability simply because I use them all the time. I’m also much more aware that there is no one size fits all approach in yoga mats.
I don’t believe that one yoga mat necessarily suits every yoga practitioner perfectly. We all have different preferences, not only in colours but texture, grip and thickness so here are my thoughts:
First Impression
My first reaction was that I absolutely love the colour of this Fushi yoga mat! It’s bright and beautiful and radiates positivity. On the down side it’s also a colour which attracts a lot of fluff so that would be my only negative point for this yoga mat. It’s easy to clean, however, and can be simply wiped down with a damp cloth or sponge.
My little yogini, who is also a fan of yoga mats, immediately remarked that the mat “smells really nice”! The mat is actually infused with essential aromatherapy oils so doesn’t have the usual “rubbery” smell that you find often in yoga mats. How amazing is that?!
Material & Grip
Fushi‘s business model is based on selling ethical health & beauty products so it’s no surprise to learn that this mat is from 25% recycled material and 100% natural plant rubber.
The position points at the front and back of the mat are really helpful for alignment.
In terms of grip I have to admit that the mat was a bit slippery to begin with was after I had used it a couple of times it was great!
One of my major problems with most yoga mats for me is that the corners tend to roll up – especially with new yoga mats. This one sticks like a magnet to the floor which is a big plus point! If you’ve ever practised Ashtanga jump throughs you might have had the problem before that you’re dragging your mat with you when your feet are coming forward… This certainly doesn’t happen with this one!!
Performance & Price
In terms of thickness it’s probably one of the thinner mats I’ve tried which suits people who like practising hand balances and more dynamic styles of yoga like Ashtanga or Vinyasa Flow. For absolute beginners I would probably recommend a slightly thicker mat like the Halfmoon Studio Yoga Mat.
At £65 the Fushi Sunlight High Performance Yoga Mat is not on the cheap side but it’s a great product and it deserves it’s name “high performance”. The material feels super strong and I’m sure will last for many many years of daily practice. In terms of value for money I would definitely recommend it highly!
Here is my little yogini trying it out and she certainly loves it!
Disclosure: I’ve been given this yoga mat free of charge in return for my honest review. All products featured in this blog are products that I have personally chosen and would recommend to my readers.Â
