How to find your passion and conquer the world

Kate Greenstock who runs Wild Rubies, a coaching business group did a fantastic workshop in our local mums in business group about a year ago to find our “Why”. Why do we do the things we do? Why do we get out of bed every day to do our jobs?

She gave us this fantastic TED talk by Simon Sinek to use as a resource and it explains the concept really well. Do have a look when you’ve got 20min to spare! It’s really worth watching.

In summary what he says and what Kate wanted to make clear to us is this:

“People don’t buy what you do they buy why you do it!”

This is especially important for small businesses who often compete with big corporate companies. People don’t care about the product your are selling – they care about why you are selling it! What do you truly believe in?

This all sounds great of course but first of all you need to find out what you are truly passionate about and turn it into a business, right?

I know a lot of women who are in the situation that I was a few years ago. You’ve been doing a job for a long time, you’re good at it and you like it but you start questioning yourself why am I doing what I’m doing?

I used to love working in the hotel industry. I loved luxury hotels, I loved travelling and everything about it! Then travelling didn’t fit in with the life that I wanted anymore once I had my kids. But most importantly I had started to not find an answer anymore when someone asked me why I was doing what I was doing. I liked it but I didn’t love it.

I’m a firm believer in doing what you are passionate about. Or at least do it in an environment that you are passionate about. When I left school I didn’t know what I was passionate about. I still didn’t know when I was 30! Things develop, things change.

A book which has really helped me with finding out what I was passionate about was What colour is your parachute? When I read it 10 years ago I didn’t get the answer straight away but the idea behind it helped me without realising it. The idea is to ask yourself lots of questions and prioritise the answers in order of importance to you.

What do you really enjoy doing?

What are your favourite skills?

What are your favourite values?

What are your favourite people environments?

Not from the book but other important questions to ask yourself:

What motivates you?

If money and time were no object what would you do?

Where would you like to do it?

It took me a long time to find out what I’m passionate about and it’s not set in stone! It’s still developing, changing or maybe just becoming clearer!

I knew I wanted to share the benefits of yoga with the world but what I realised over the last year is the audience which I would particularly like to help. Families. Any family member, regardless of their age.

So here is why I do what I do and how I would like to conquer the world 😉

Life is stressful and life is very busy. Once the kids are in school there is very little time to truly connect and have fun together. There are after school clubs, busy social calendars with birthday parties etc and separate weekend activities.

I believe that families deserve to have the time and space to connect with each other. I believe that every single family member, regardless of their age deserves to feel healthy, strong and balanced and have the tools to cope with what ever life throws at them.

That’s why I teach Family Yoga.

Have you found your “Why”? Are your still looking for what you are truly passionate about or have you found it already?

  1. I love this as I am passionate about women asking what am I doing and why on a regular basis. Having watched you scope about and doing yoga your why is very clear to me Christine.

  2. This is a lovely post, I recognise so many of the things you are saying; my passions are just becoming clear to me and like you children have defined them for me. I have just followed you on FB and seen that you are based close to me, so I will be looking more at what you are doing; I think yoga is great for children and families. x #Sharethejoy

  3. Christine this resonates so much with me especially about our passions changing over time. That’s why I believe it’s so important to take time to reflect and change course or reprioritise if needed. I love the book and TED talk you mention – I’ve found them inspiring as you have! Thanks for linking up at #sharethejoy x
